OU Exam Solutions

Introduction

As part of my revision for OU exams I always try to go through old exam papers. One of the problems I have is to check whether my solution is correct. I have therefore provided some solutions to help you do this.

I have provided answers for the following courses :-

These are not MODEL answers.

There is also the excellent M500 weekend where they provide tuition and go through previous exam papers. There may also be references to other pages with exam solutions on this site.

Most of the solutions are in PDF files. To read these you will need a PDF reader. A free reader is available from www.adobe.com .

The latest exam papers can be obtained from the OUSA.

M337 - Complex Analysis

I have not done this course. However I did study its predecessor M332 in 1989. I have borrowed a handbook and have make copious references to it in the solutions. These references are there to help you to look up things and most are not necessary for the solution to make sense.

Solutions are available for 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013 as PDF files (175K each).

I shall not do any solutions for 2015. If anyone has some them send them to me so I can add them to the site.

Recent Changes

23/04/15. I was told a long time ago by Anthon van Dijk of an error in my solution to 2009 12a. He wrote "Required was the extended Mobius-transformation, but you've only given the solution for C-{-1}". I have not looked at this but I assume he is correct. A corrected solution would be welcomed.

Known Errors I shall not correct

Qu. 7 (b). As q(z) is not defined at z = 0 then the circle should omit the origin. The error occurs in the 2005 and 1998 solutions.

If you find any errors or think an alternative solution is better please let me know .

M338 - Topology

I have not done this course. However I did study a similar course M386, Metric and Topological Spaces and Geometric Topology, in 1991. This was superceded by M435.

Solutions for the 1991 M386 paper, and the 1994, 1998, and 2001 M435 papers can be found on John Taylor's web site.

Solutions are available for 2006 as a PDF file (135K).

If you find any errors, think an alternative solution is better, or wish to donate a handbook please let me know .

M381 - Number Theory and Mathematical Logic

I did this course in 1991.

The 2008 paper should not have been made available on the OUSA site. It was removed after several months. I am not willing to supply the paper.

Number theory

Solutions are available for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2014 as PDF files (125K each).

Recent Changes

18/5/14. Qu. 7(ii). Add improved solution for error bound suggested by Linda Brown.

Logic

Solutions are available for 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 (including alternative NT solutions), and 2013 as PDF files (125K each).
The last question has not been done on the 2000-2003 papers.
You may find these notes useful if you are going to attempt the old style papers.

Recent Changes 7/5/14.

Qu. 10 (ii). Remove unnecessary use of sg. Previously read sg(mult(...)).

Qu. 11 (iii). Use bound n + 1 rather than n. (Linda Brown)

Qu. 12 (ii). Registers used by program Q now set to zero before it is run. (Linda Brown)

Qu. 13 (i). Set 0 in column (5) to 1.

Qu. 13 (iii). Deleted comment saying solution suspect and replaced the incorrect solution.

Qu. 16 (iii). Added improved solution by Linda Brown.

If you find any errors or think an alternative solution is better please let me know .
